The History Of What happened On 28th May 1803 The Igbo Landing.

On 28th May 1803, the Igbo landing happened.

The Igbo landing showcases the resilience, courage, and determination of 75 enslaved Igbo people who faced unimaginable hardship but still chose to assert their humanity and dignity by refusing to live as slaves.

In 1803, on St. Simons Island, Glynn County, Georgia, a group of enslaved Igbo people made a courageous choice. After enduring the horrors of captivity, they rebelled aboard their slave ship, grounding it at Igbo Landing. Led by an Igbo chief, they marched into the creek, singing in their native language

“ Mmụọ mmiri du anyi bịa, mmụọ mmiri ga-edu anyi laa” which means “The Water Spirit brought us, the Water Spirit will take us home”.

They thereby accepted the protection of their God, “Chukwu” and death over the alternative of slavery.

Beyonce depicted and paid homage to the Igbo Landing in her work “Love Drought”.
The quote “Bury me in the ocean with my ancestors who jumped from ships, ‘cause they knew death was better than bondage”. by Erik Killmonger in Black panther also referred to this event.
