The history of Thompson Oranu: The Iconic Igbo Romantic Musician of the 90s
When it comes to romantic and love music in Igbo during the 1990s, it is impossible not to mention the legendary Thompson Oranu. As a child, I remember listening to my uncles play his music constantly.
Gịnị ka m ga-emere gị ka obi dị gị mma?
Gịnị ka m ga-emere gị ka obi dị gị mma?
Ooo onye ọma, hapụ ndị asịrị ka kọwa…
Those lyrics from one of his hit songs still resonate with me today.
Thompson Oranu’s love songs were part of the soundtrack of that era. His music had a special way of bringing young couples closer together and strengthening their love, even without the influence of money.
He sang in both English and Igbo. Some of his popular songs include “Ihe Anyị Na-emere Onwe Anyị,” “Think Twice,” “Keep on Loving Me,” “Echezona,” and “Shalom,” among others.
Born in Nnobi, Anambra State, Nigeria, Thompson Oranu made a lasting impact on Igbo music. His songs remain evergreen, and many of his love songs have become classics.
